Subject: Northern Beaches Hospital Fire Safety Report
I noted the NSW Fire Department’s comments in the Fire Report for the new Northern Beaches Hospital and some significant departures were found.
Of concern is previous report with 21 Departures
(1) Insulated cladding.
(2) Single Ignition Point only analysed.
(3) Open fire stairs.
(4) Ingress of oxygen to feed a fire when fire doors are open upon evacuation of occupants to the open fire stairs.
(5) Type of Occupants.
(6) Number of occupants (5621) and their safety and evacuation in a fire.
Is Fire and Rescue happy with the Fire Safety Report for the new hospital building?
There is a website that might assist in understanding the concerns I have.

Regarding Fire Safety at the new Northern Beaches Hospital.
Having obtained the fire safety report and the fire engineer’s response via a GIPA request and NCAT review, I would like to raise some concerns, which I consider to be relevant.
1) Only one ignition point analysed.
2) Disclaimer for catastrophic events.
3) Major bushfires from northwest ignored.
4) Sprinkler storage and use time not discussed.
5) Failure of mains supply not discussed (Manly / Warringah / Pittwater spur off the north shore loop fed from Pymble. Failure in January 1994 bushfire Bayview / Mona Vale / Warriewood / Elanora).
6) Failure to adequately address ‘characteristics of occupants’ including bed ridden and mental health patients.
7) Open fire stairs vertigo problems.
8) Open fire stairs smoke problems.
9) Open fire stairs used in evacuation result in external doors on each level opening and closing with ingress of fresh oxygen each time to fuel the fire.
10) Flammability of insulation of both steel and aluminium building cladding.
11) Difficulties in evacuating patients ‘to street level’.
It would be greatly appreciated if these ‘concerns’ could be reviewed to ensure fire safety for the expected 5000 plus occupants, especially in the catastrophic events disclaimer by the fire engineer, (and certified by the private certifier) when a major hospital is needed the most.
Attached to this email is the GIPA application and NCAT review files.
